Eugenia Meri

Specialist Educator in German Language and Literature

I have known and worked with Alexander between 2017-2020 at Ionios International School where he was the Head of the Music department in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). Alexander stood out as he was very knowledgable of his subject, but also about the IBDP and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). His deep understanding of the IB curriculum and the IBO later led him to become a workshop leader for the IBO.

Alexander's dedication to his students is impressive, as he always went above and beyond to ensure his students got the best education possible and as a result reached their full potential. Many of Alexander's students went on to study music at top universities around the world.

Alexander incorporated Theory of Knowledge (TOK) into his lessons in a most interesting and exciting way, this leading to his students always knowing what they learned and how to apply their knowledge. I observed many of Alexander's lessons and found him to be very confident, knowledgable, and fun when he taught.

I would definitely recommend Alexander to anyone that is looking for a charismatic educator, who is driven by excellence, and reflects a high standard of professionalism.

Dr. Stylianos Tavoularis

Teacher of Philosophy

I have had the pleasure of working with Alex for 3 years in a young IBDP program, at that time and I have come to appreciate the level of his ambition to design and implement the IBDP Music course with an explicit and thorough consideration of music through the lens of questions raised in the IBDP Theory of Knowledge course. Alex has not been motivated merely by the endeavour to integrate ToK into the Music course but by the desire to respond to epistemological and axiological questions naturally arising through his own long standing engagement with art. Through the process of familiarising his students with the assessment criteria for various components of his course, Alex has lead and facilitated his students' reflection on fundamental questions pertaining to philosophy of art such as the definition of art and the recognition of something as a work of art as well as the criteria for the attribution of value on an artwork. Alex has enabled his students to appreciate how much different responses one can formulate depending on the point of view of the artist and their audience namely through the perspectives of hermeneutics and reception theory. Through discussions such as this Alex has been able to develop and embed into his teaching a form of interdisciplinary between the Music course, visual arts and literature. I am absolutely confident that Alex has so much to offer as an IB workshop leader in the aforementioned respects.

Philip Walker

University Adviser

To whom it may concern.

I have known, and worked closely with, Mr. Tzavellas since September of 2011 and for 9 years as a fellow teacher and in my capacity as the School university advisor at Ionios IB School, Athens, Greece.

First and foremost, as a teacher of Music he is able, committed, and effective. He individually founded and set up the IB Music department in the school from scratch without any pay and little assistance. This speaks volumes about his commitment to his subject as a classroom teacher.

As an IB teacher, he is organized, precise, rigorous and has a fine eye for detail, and understands the importance of keeping track of deadlines, and transmits this understanding clearly, impartially, and with a firmness and at the same time a certain comprehension, to students and teaching staff alike.

What Alex possesses which also makes him stand out as a teacher is his holistic understanding of the demands of the I.B. Diploma programme. Having had 9 years experience as the sole founder and head of the musical department, he has gained a certain insight into the rigours and demands placed upon students. He understands far better than many colleagues the importance of getting to grips with deadlines, assessment criteria and the whole panoply of I.B. Diploma practices, given that students are to be assessed by objective, global criteria, and not just ‘measured’ against each other or against their peers from the same country. This is not always easy for students to understand, yet Alex is patient and committed in transmitting this understanding to students.

I would highly recommend his breadth and depth of experience, safe in the knowledge that you would be employing a committed, dedicated and assiduous colleague.

I am happy to be contacted personally, and I would be happy to stand by the words I have written above.

Yours faithfully Philip Walker
